Aker BioMarine, Lipogen Come Together To Develop Phospholipids Formula

Published: 11-May-2010

Aker BioMarine, an integrated biotechnology company positioned to create value from krill harvesting and processing and Lipogen, a producer of the functional cognitive ingredient phosphatidylserine (PS), have joined forces to develop a phospholipids formula for cognitive health.

Aker BioMarine and Lipogen said that the target formula is a matrix of Lipogen PS phosphatidylserine produced from Aker BioMarine’s pure Superba Krill Oil.

Reportedly, Phosphatidylserine (PS) and omega-3 fatty acids are both key components of the brain’s cell membranes. The new ingredient could either be applied together with multivitamins or as a single ingredient targeting brain health.

Lipogen claimed that PS, a natural brain ingredient is a clinically proven nutritional supplement. It is designed to boost cognitive ability in adults whose cognitive function is slowing down due to age-related decline in memory and other cognition areas, as detailed in two qualified, FDA health claims.

Aker BioMarine claimed that Superba Krill Oil, a lipid extract from the crustacean Antarctic Krill (Euphausia superba), is rich in omega-3 phospholipids and the powerful antioxidant astaxanthin. Studies have demonstrated that omega-3 fatty acids from Superba Krill Oil are incorporated more efficiently into cell membranes than triglycerides omega-3s from fish oil.

Matts Johansen, executive vice president of Aker BioMarine, said: “This new ingredient is expected to combine two clinically tested ingredients, Lipogen PS and our pure Superba Krill Oil.”

David Rutenberg, CEO of Lipogen, said: “Lipogen is proud to join forces with Aker BioMarine to develop this ingredient. PS acts synergistically with omega-3 fatty acids to increase cognitive abilities, supporting memory, mood, concentration, stress control and other cognitive functions.”
